QUESTIONS

Question 1

State the ideal gas law.

Answer 1

A: pV = nRT

p = pressure V = volume n = no of moles R = molar gas constant T = temperature

Question 2

If the volume of the container were 30 cm3 , how would you enter that in the ideal gas equation?

Answer 2

Remember that the volume in the ideal gas law equation has to be quoted in m3.

There are 1000000 cm3 in 1 m3. This means that the 30 cm3 must be entered as 30 / 1000000.

Question 3

Normal atmospheric pressure is about 100 kPa. How would you enter this in the ideal gas equation?

Answer 3

Remember that the pressure must be quoted in Pa.

There are 1000 Pa in 1 kPa and so the 100 kPa must be entered as 100000

Question 4

The temperature of a container is 46 oC. How would this be entered in the ideal gas equation?

Answer 4

Remember that the temperature must be entered as the absolute temperature so that means in Kelvin. The temperature in Kelvin is found by adding 273 to the temperature in oC.

So, 46 oC becomes 46 + 273 = 319 K

Question 5

How many moles of gas are there if the temperature is 67 oC, the volume is 30 cm3 and the pressure is 400 kPa?

Answer 5

 R = 8.31 Jmol-1K-1
