Infra Red Spectroscopy

Certain groups in a molecule absorb infra-red radiation at characteristic frequencies.

Fingerprinting allows identification of a molecule by comparison of spectra in a database.

Looking at a spectrum it is possible to identify particular functional groups and to identify impurities with reference to data books.
