Some notes about Diabetes - Type 1 and Type 2

Type 2 Diabetes is diagnosed by finding hyperglycaemia when a blood test is made. Hyper = over, excessive, Glycaemia = to do with the blood glucose level.

Type 2 diabetes (Diabetes mellitus) is a late onset condition which means children and teens are most unlikely to develop it.

Type 2 diabetes can be managed by diet – this is where the GI comes in! A diet that’s low in the GI is said to be beneficial to sufferers of Type 2 diabetes.

Children and teens have Type 1 Diabetes which is when the body fails to make insulin which of course is responsible for moving blood glucose into the body’s cells (glucose uptake). This is a most serious, life-threatening condition.
