Answer

Muscle tissue requires energy to a greater degree than many other tissues. Glycogen is the molecule that is broken down in response to energy needs.

(a) A hormone is secreted in response to the anticipation of exercise. Name this hormone.

Adrenaline / epinephrine

(b) It is thought that this hormone has a greater effect on muscle tissue glycogen than elsewhere. Suggest why this would be advantageous to an athlete or someone taking physical exercise.

Muscles working harder / contracting more (during the exercise) ;

Respiration will be greater in the muscle cells ;

To produce ATP (for increased contraction) ;

Glycogen broken down into glucose ;

Glucose produced where it is going to be needed ;

More efficient / eq than transporting glucose (to the muscle)
