Use the ideas about ionic bonding to show the ionic bonds in these compounds.

An example is given for sodium chloride to show what is required.

NaCl (the atomic numbers are 11 and 17 respectively).

Na has configuration 2,8,1 and so loses one electron to form 2,8,0 Na+

Cl has configuration 2,8,7 and so gains one electron to form 2,8,8 Cl-

One 1+ ion can match the one 1- ion and so the formula for the compound is NaCl

Now try MgCl2 (the atomic numbers are 12 and 17 respectively)

Na2S (the atomic numbers are 11 and 16 respectively)
